MSA Theater Arts Presents Hamlet

Marin School of the Arts students will present Shakespeare’s Hamlet the last two weekends in March.  The performances will be held at the Novato High School Performing Arts Center on Thursday, March 23, Friday, March 24 and Saturday March 25, as well as Thursday, March 30, Friday, March 31 and Saturday April 1.  All performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will feature the MSA Theater students.  Tickets are available at the door for $10 Adults and $5 Students/Seniors.  Advance ticket purchases can be made by calling 415-892-7915.

Hamlet is known as one of the greatest stage dramas of all time, brought to life by vengeful ghosts, murder, madness and political intrigue.  At the center of it all Hamlet, the young Prince of Denmark, struggles to find his way -- and himself -- as he comes to terms with the untimely and suspicious death of his father, the King, along with the hasty remarriage of his mother to his Uncle, the new King.

Spurred on by a vision of his father's spirit who urges Hamlet to avenge him, the young Prince must also navigate a stormy relationship with his girlfriend, Ophelia, and political double-dealings in the Danish court. As he brilliantly unravels the web of lies that entangle him, Hamlet must confront his own anger, his crippling self-doubt, and his deep desire to act with courage and integrity. What emerges is an intensely human story; at times humorous, at times bittersweet, and always teeming with action.

The cast is led by Chase Mullins in the role of Hamlet along with Chris Selland as Hamlet’s inner-being.  Claudius, King of Denmark will be performed by Ian Bruce, and the role of Ophelia is played by Erica Bitton, with Viri Cisneros as Ophelia’s inner-being.    Other cast members include Megan Marsh (Horatio), Alissa Lund (Gertrude), Brigitte Johnson (Gertrude’s inner-being), Jessica McAlister (Polonius), Sam Turnbull (Laertes, her Son), Tess Jamieson (Rosencrantz), Dana Pollak (Guildenstern), Netta Joseph (Osric) and Nikki Allair (1st Player).   The cast also includes the entire MSA Theater Arts class.   The production of Hamlet is directed by David Sinaiko, Director of Theater at Marin School of the Arts.

To purchase tickets for the Marin School of the Arts performance of Hamlet, call the Marin School of the Arts office at 892-7915 or visit Novato High School at 625 Arthur Street in Novato.  Advance tickets are recommended and seating is limited.  If purchasing tickets at the door, arrive 30 minutes in advance of the performance.

MSA Jazz Band Takes First Place at Folsom Jazz Festival
12 Soloists given “Awards of Excellence” by Festival Judges

MSA Jazz Band
MSA Jazz Band - First Place Winners

The Marin School of the Arts (“MSA”) Jazz Band took first place in its division at the Folsom Jazz Festival on Saturday, January 28th. Two Jazz Combos also took top honors receiving “Unanimous Superior” scores, while the third combo received “Excellent” scores. This is the third year that the MSA Jazz Band has received top awards at the Folsom Festival, but the first time to be awarded a first place trophy. Over 100 bands and 70 schools from California competed in the festival.

The Jazz Band performed three selections including Boplicity by Miles Davis, Passion Flower by Billy Strayhorn and El Gatote by Matt Harris. Kelly Styger (alto sax), Joey Schneider (trumpet) and Wesley Woo (baritone sax) each received “Awards of Excellence” for their solo performances. Solo awards are given at the judges’ discretion to individual musicians whose performances are judged outstanding.

All five members of the MSA Jazz Combo I featuring Joey Schneider (trumpet), Nick de Ryss (drums), James Perdelwitz (saxophone), Seth Honig (bass) and James Harmon (guitar) were also given “Awards of Excellence” for their individual performances during the combo competition. The group received the highest “Unanimous Superior” for their performance. Additional solo awards and “Unanimous Superior” scores were given to MSA performers in the MSA Jazz Combo III. This combo included Erin Greenwell (vocalist), James Harmon (guitar) and Seth Honig (bass). The group was praised by the judges as being “talented, original and exciting”. A soloist award was also received by Ali Rucker in the Jazz Combo II for her versatile performance as both a vocalist and saxophonist. Combo II featured musicians on their second instruments to demonstrate versatility and breadth of talent at MSA.

MSA Jazz Band Instructor Garrett Michaelsen said, “Folsom Jazz Festival is the second largest high school festival and attracts up to 70 schools throughout the state. It’s exciting to see students from MSA do so well amongst some of the top performing bands, including Berkeley and Folsom High School, with well established and highly competitive music programs. To have a school from Marin County take 1st place in their division this year is a tribute to the talent and dedication of these students, as well as quality of the program at MSA.”

The Marin School of the Arts (MSA) Drama and Musical Theater Department earned six medals at the Lenaea Drama Festival on January 27-29. The Lenaea Festival, one of the largest high school theater festivals of its kind in the nation, was hosted by Sacramento State University.

MSA students earned a Command Performance Gold for their Musical Theater Performance, Gold for Monologue, Gold for Duo Scene, Silver for Monologue, Silver for One-Act, and a Bronze for a Monologue. Awards were announced late Sunday Jan 29, 2006. The school received more awards than any other in the festival.

Keleki Gottschalk was awarded the Individual Performance Gold award and a Command Performance for "Just One Step' from Songs for a New World. She was the top student honored out of 20 entries in this new category. Other Gold awards recipients included Paige Brinskele, Monologue and Emma Bushnell and Evan Tamura, Duo Scene.

Silver awards were received by Birgitte Johnson, Monolgue, and the entire cast of Love-Life-Mayhem, One Act Improvisation. A bronze medal was awarded to Sam Turnbull, Monologue. Love -Life-Mayhem with a cast of 30 (the complete MSA Theater Arts class) just completed a four-night sell-out run at the Performing Arts Center and was in the top ten One Acts with its Silver Medal.

Over 200 Monologues were performed from over 50 Northern California High Schools and only 8 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze were awarded. About 150 Duo Scenes were also judged with 8 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze awarded. Out of the 50 One Acts performed over the 3 day festival; only 6 medals of each color were awarded.

MSA’s Director of Theater, David Sinaiko, praised the work of his students. “Our students bring an unusually high amount of focus and commitment to their work, and their performances at the festival clearly demonstrated that. The respondents -- Lenaea's version of judges -- were consistently impressed with the polish and preparation that MSA's student actors exhibited in the monologues, scenes and our one-act play. Our community and school district can take a great deal of pride in claiming these students as their own,” commented Sinaiko.

Fifty of our 55 MSA Theater Arts & Musical Theater students attended the festival's 50th anniversary at the Sacramento State University Campus.

Marin School of the Arts at Novato High School
Now Accepting Applications for 2006/2007

Student Shadow Days & Parent Tours Scheduled for November 17,
December 1, January 19, February 9 and March 2

Marin School of the Arts at Novato High school is now accepting applications for the 2006/2007 Academic year. Students are invited to sign-up for a “Shadow Day” where they can spend a day on campus and attend classes with a student guide. On the morning of the Shadow Day, parents are invited to schedule a guided tour of the campus with Principal, Rey Mayoral or Director, Mark Peabody. The events are scheduled for five Thursdays, including November 17, December 1, January 19, February 9 and March 2. The “Shadow Day” will run from 9:10 a.m. – 2:25 p.m. Student auditions will begin in early January.

Marin School of the Arts (MSA) at Novato High is the only public school performing arts program in the North Bay that combines a challenging visual and performing arts curriculum with the benefits of a traditional high school. Currently, 215 students attend MSA and are pursuing their interests in one of the following areas: vocal or instrumental music, musical theatre, drama, dance, creative writing, video and filmmaking, visual arts and digital arts. Of this, 20% of the students are from outside the Novato Unified School District.

“We have more than 40 students who live in Southern Marin or even Sonoma County,” said Mark Peabody, Founder and Director. “Students who want to pursue a more real-world and intensive arts education are naturally attracted to MSA. We have a unique program that gives talented students a way to explore their interest in-depth, yet still participate in the programs and activities offered through Novato High School,” he added.

Mark Peabody, who had envisioned a school of this nature for many years, founded Marin School of the Arts. “When the school was started, one of the founding principles was to create a powerful educational experience where students would be challenged to achieve not just high quality but the highest level of excellence,” said Peabody. Mark believes they are well on their way to achieving this goal.

“In an era of public school under funding and loss of electives, I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish in just two years. Last year, our students won more than 100 awards, some in major competitions against schools with top-ranked arts and music programs. That’s quite an accomplishment!” he added.

To schedule an appointment for one of the upcoming events, contact Marin School of the Arts at 415-892-7915. Events are expected to fill quickly, so please call early to schedule an appointment.
